Basic Nutritional Requirements for Pregnant Mares

Nutritional requirements will vary depending on the mare and foal, but the general requirements are outlined below.

Energy

Used for the maintenance of the body and bodily functions as well as for the developing foal and associated mammary and placental tissues. Additional energy may be required in order to meet the demands of the unborn foal and provide the mare with reserves in order to prepare for lactation.

Protein

Provides amino acids and the building blocks for the development of the foal. Good quality protein with adequate lysine and other amino acids is essential for foetal development.

Vitamins and Minerals

Should be considered as a group rather than individually. This is because they do not function individually and an imbalance of minerals or vitamins can result in a deficiency or lack of absorption of others. When there is an intake of vitamins or minerals above a certain requirement, the amount absorbed and excreted increases, and excess amounts may be harmful as they can bind to other minerals, creating deficiency.

Minerals should not be added to the diet unless it is known which ones and how much is needed.

If you are ever in doubt, contact an equine nutritionist or veterinarian who will be able to give you the direction that you need.
