Mouth and Hoof Care

Hoof and mouth care are some of the most likely causes of a vet visit and regular farrier visits and check-ups can be what ensures that your foal develops correctly.

When breeding your horse, it is of utmost importance to consider the veterinary costs that might accumulate after the birth, not just for the foal but also for the mare.

Hoof Care

Much like an adult horse, foal’s hooves grow along with the rest of their body and when their legs are as small and fragile as they are, walking incorrectly can lead to malformations. Incorporating farrier visits into your budget should be one of your top priorities after the foal is up and walking about. Ideally, they should be specialised in foals and yearlings, as they can have vastly different needs to an adult horse.

Mouth Care

Dentistry can also be a major cost to be considered before breeding your mare. It is important to get a dentist check-up before breeding in order to ensure that the mare will be able to maintain condition throughout the pregnancy and that the foal is not likely to be born with any issues that would lead to hefty costs later on. The foal is born without teeth and the dentist can check that they are all growing in nicely from about the week mark, but in general the dentist will just be needed for check-ups if anything appears to be the matter.
